The MPAA rating system has often come under attack for being inconsistent and confusing. Downloading the MPAA web database, I used data visualization to explore this system.
Poster 1. The ratings system since its inception: all movies color-coded by rating, listed by year.
Poster 2. In 2000, the MPAA introduced brief explanations of why a particular film received a particular rating. This is a list of all terms ordered by frequency.
