Art+Culture, Best in Show SXSW in the early wild west, internet days, was looking to reinvent itself for web wrangling 2.0. Our task was to maintain the spirit of the old site, while reinvigorating the grand scheme of finding, and forging, the diverse ways in which the arts speak to each other.
As part of the Art+Culture team, we truly believe that every work of art – an installation, a book, a song, a dance, a painting, a film – creates, and is created by, a network of other works. In other words, to create is to converse.
With a combination of set taxomony and user-based folksonomy, plus cutting edge Flash and Ajax, we created a layered, visual-based, discovery process: from concepts floating in a sea of relativity, to hierarchical tree maps with delicious differences in groupings, to user-based curations down roads less taken.
